BASIC IRISH
Open or CloseWho is this course for?
The basic level course runs for 30 weeks in 10 week blocks with a few holidays between each block of 10 lessons. The term begins in September and runs through to June. This class is suitable for students who are complete beginners to learning Irish. Classes are typically based around developing conversation at this stage. Students will be exposed to speaking, listening, reading and writing material for each topic with the emphasis on developing conversation skills. Grammar is addressed in context only. Students can join during the year however, joining in the second term would require self-study of previous material.Content No. of weeks Outcomes 1. Greetings/Language used in class/introducing yourself 1 - 2 - Students are exposed to speaking, reading, listening and writing material in line with each learning area.
2. Myself and other people - physical description, my family, children and other people 3 - 6 3. Numbers to 30, days of the week. 7 -10 - Knowledge and vocabulary are built upon throughout the year.
4. Months of year, seasons 11 - 12 5. Colours - describing an item using colours, link to seasons, describing people 13 - 14 - Grammar is addressed in context only
6. Offering and Asking for things/Food and drink 15 - 17 - Students can opt to complete Cúpla Focal oral exam or complete skills assessment online via TEG
7. Shops and other facilities 18 - 20 8. Talking about everyday activities/Dialann an Lae 21 -25 9. Introduce verbs/Asking questions/Orders 26 - 27 10. Weather/Holidays/Going places 28 - 29 - Issue of completion certificate- evidence of level for registration the following year.
11. End of year assessment- progress or retake basic level 30 -
IMPROVER
Open or CloseWho is this course for?
The improver level course runs for 30 weeks in 10 week blocks with a few holidays between each block of 10 lessons. The term begins in September and runs through to June. This class is suitable for students who have completed a beginners class. Students will be exposed to speaking, listening, reading and writing material for each topic with the emphasis on developing conversation skills. Grammar is addressed in context for topic 1 – 8 and in more detail for topic 9. Students can join during the year however, joining in the second term would require self-study of previous material.Content No. of weeks Outcomes 1. Revision of basic topics- 2 weeks consolidation 1 - 2 - Students develop reading, listening and writing and speaking skills in line with each learning area
2. Holidays- more in depth than basic level 3 - 5 3. Myself and other people- focus on developing vocabulary 7 -10 4. Hobbies and Pastimes 11 - 14 - Grammar is addressed in context through topics 1-8 and past tense is taught step by step in topic 9
5. Houses and Homes/My Locality 15 - 17 6. Shops and Public Services 18 - 20 - Students can opt to complete Fáinne Airgead exam or TEG A1/A2 exams
7. Expressing likes and dislikes 21 - 25 8. Giving instructions and orders 26 - 27 9. Talking in the past tense 28 - 29 10. End of year assessment- progress or retake improvers course 30 - Issue of completion certificate- evidence of level for registration the following year.

INTERMEDIATE
Open or CloseThe intermediate level course runs for 30 weeks in 10 week blocks with a few holidays between each block of 10 lessons. The term begins in September and runs through to June. This class is suitable for students who have completed at least 1-2 years of studying Irish as an adult learner. Students will be exposed to speaking, listening, reading and writing material for each topic with the emphasis on developing conversation skills and broadening vocabulary at this level. Grammar is built into each topic at this level. Students can join during the year however, joining in the second term would require self-study of previous material.Content No. of weeks Outcomes 1. Revise and consolidate topics from improver level 1 - 2 - Students develop reading, listening and writing and speaking skills in line with each learning area.
2. Past tense- more focus on grammar 3 - 5 3. Home Life/School Life/Work Life/Retirement 7 -10 - Knowledge and vocabulary are built upon throughout the year.
4. Myself and other people- extended writing focus 11 - 12 5. Houses and Environments- local and global 13 - 15 - Grammar strands are planned in all topics
6. Talking in the Future Tense- Making future plans or arrangements- future tense in context only. 16 - 18 18 - 20 - Students can opt to complete Fáinne Airgead exam or TEG A1/A2 exams
7. Giving orders/commands 21 - 22 8. Expressing opinions 23 - 24 9. Using common verbs to describe a daily routine 25 10. Present Tense introduction 26 - 27 - Issue of completion certificate- evidence of level for registration the following year.
11. Silver Fáinne preparation 28 - 29 12. End of year assessment- progress to Advanced level or retake intermediate course 30 -
ADVANCED 1
Open or CloseWho is this course for?
The advanced level 1 course is the 1st year of a two year advanced course which runs for 30 weeks in 10 week blocks with a few holidays between each block of 10 lessons. The term begins in September and runs through to June. This class is suitable for students who have been studying Irish for 3 – 4 years as an adult learner. Students develop all language skills at this level, including an introduction to translation skills.Content No. of weeks Outcomes 1. Revision of intermediate topics- 2 weeks 1 - 2 - Students develop reading, listening and writing and speaking skills in line with each learning area.
2. Past tense consolidation- focus on translation skills 3 - 5 3. Holidays, travel and tourism- develop countries/place names- extended writing 7 -10 11-12 - Knowledge and vocabulary are built upon throughout the year.
4. Talking about everyday events in the present tense- rules and exceptions 13 - 15 5. Present Tense- writing and translation focus 16 - 18 - Grammar strands are planned in all topics
6. Speaking about yourself and your family- giving personal details, age, jobs, number of children, extended family 18 - 20 - Translation skills are developed at this stage
7. Cuir i láthair- choice of topic 5 mins presenting 21 - 22 - Students can opt to complete TEG B1/B2 exams
8. Talking about everyday events in the future tense 23 -25 - GCSE Exam is possible at this level
9. Future tense- writing and translation focus 26 - 27 10. Translation between all 3 tenses 28 - 29 - Issue of completion certificate- evidence of level for registration the following year.

ADVANCED 2

The advanced level 2 course is the 2nd year of a two year advanced course which runs for 30 weeks in 10 week blocks with a few holidays between each block of 10 lessons. The term begins in September and runs through to June. This class is suitable for students who have been studying Irish for 3 – 4 years as an adult learner. Students develop all language skills at this level, including an introduction to translation skills and a literary text study.Content No. of weeks Outcomes 1. Revision of advanced level 1 topics 1 - 10 - Students develop reading, listening and writing and speaking skills in line with each learning area.
2. Past tense consolidation- focus on translation skills 3. Holidays, travel and tourism- develop countries/place names - Knowledge and vocabulary is built upon throughout the year.
4. Talking about everyday events in the present tense 5. Present Tense- writing and translation focus - Grammar strands are planned in all topics
6. Speaking about yourself and your family- giving personal details, age, jobs, number of children, extended family - Translation skills are developed at this stage from Irish to English and English to Irish
7. Talking about everyday events in the future tense 11 - 15 - Students can opt to complete TEG B2/C1 exams
8. Future tense- writing and translation focus 16 - 18 - GCSE Exam is possible at this level
9. Translation between all 3 tenses 18 - 20 10. Literary study- choose a poem or short story to study as part of the course (An Béal Bocht) 21 -22 23 - 25 - Fáinne Óir
11. Using the internet as a resource for Irish 26 - 27 - Issue of completion certificate
12. Weekly translation tasks 13. Dictionary work- Pota Focal/Teannglann - Students should be able to begin AS Level/HND Irish at this stage
